ADHD Diagnosis in the UK
In the UK you have the legal right to select who will conduct your NHS mental health tests. But not all healthcare professionals are certified to recognize ADHD.
Panorama has been told by patients and whistleblowers that some private clinics are diagnosing ADHD and prescribing medications frequently without proper tests. We went undercover to learn more.
What is an assessment of an initiative?
A psychiatrist will meet with you to discuss the impact of ADHD on your life and whether medication can help. You'll need to provide details of your symptoms and any problems that they may be causing. You will be asked about your work and family life. Private psychiatric services are faster and more professional, especially in London. The cost ranges from PS600 to up to PS1,200. Private psychiatrists are skilled in conducting assessments of people from different backgrounds, and are able to provide a tailored treatment plan, particularly if you're highly educated or have a thriving career. They can also screen for and help with co-morbidities, such as depression and anxiety, that are often found along with ADHD.
The Psychiatrist assesses your symptoms using the DSM V criteria and determines whether you meet the criteria of an ADHD diagnosis. You must demonstrate at least six traits (symptoms) that are present in your life today and how they impact on your past experiences.
The Psychiatrist will inform you of your options and the next steps. You can decide to start treatment with stimulants like methylphenidate. Stimulants belong to the class B drug and therefore subject to the Misuse of Drugs Act. They require prescription from a psychiatrist or a doctor who is registered with the General Medical Council.

Can I get a diagnosis through Right to Choose?

This will help your provider understand the severity of your symptoms and how they affect your life. It is important to answer these questions honestly and clearly.

The NHS does not currently offer the option adhd assessment psychiatrist of titration for medicines through the Right to Choose path. Even if you're diagnosed with this pathway, you may not be able to access the medication that you require.
There are a number of other routes to an ADHD diagnosis that include private clinics. The BBC's Panorama program recently exposed private clinics that offer quick, cheap diagnosis for people suffering from ADHD. These methods could have serious consequences for instance, when you attempt to claim benefits such as the Disabled Students Allowance or other reasonable accommodations at work.
It's important to remember that the stimulants prescribed for ADHD are Class B substances which means they are subject to restrictions under the Misuse of Drugs Act. If you're found guilty of committing an offense when using these drugs, you could be punished with a substantial fine or even jail time.
If you're diagnosed with ADHD whether through the NHS or privately you may be entitled to disability benefits like Income Support, Attendance Allowance, or both, based on the degree of the disorder.
